Matheny Ridge 618 Quality Bull Rifle Tag
« on: September 06, 2012, 04:47:22 PM »
Hi, I'm back again for more information.  I drew an October 1-12 Matheny Ridge rifle bull tag and have been researching the unit.  Obviously this must be some rugged country!  So I want to do my best to put myself into some elk.  So far my research indicates to scout the North and South sides of this unit, in particular the Queets and Quinault lowlands- or as close to them within the unit.  I'm favoring scouting mostly the North side just South of Sams River and East to the Park boundry along FR 2180.  But also the DNR lands bordering the Park to the West.  Does this make sense?  Or are the Elk all over in this unit, including up high on the ridges?  Where should I focus my scouting?

I have the idea to go off hunting on foot and bugle sparingly early morning to locate bulls.  Then closing the gap with cow calls?  Does this make sense, or am I better off to find a trail and just sit all day?

Lastly, I hear there is lots of brush.  What sort of shot distance might I expect.  30 Yards, 50 or 100 or more Yards?

Thanks to all those who know the unit for any advice.

I went bear hunting up there last year. Not in the exact location your describing, but up on one of the 2100 roads. All I can say is it is THICK!
Good luck though, its really a pretty area.

You need to know how to hunt and track elk in the timber, or hunt the very few clearcuts on the DNR ground.
